Fronts, Irregular Cycles and Bistability in a Reaction-Diffusion Model of Tropical Tree Cover

چکیده
Observed bimodal tree cover distributions at particular environmental conditions and theoretical models indicate that some areas in the tropics can be in either of the alternative stable vegetation states forest or savanna. However, when including spatial interaction in nonspatial differential equation models of a bistable quantity, only the state with the lowest potential energy remains stable. If bistability cannot be rejected, differential equation models will therefore need an extra feature. Here we show via analysis and simulation of a reaction-diffusion model how bimodal tree cover distributions can arise. When savanna tree cover is low, there is a front separating forests from savannas, which is determined by external forcings. At higher savanna tree cover, irregular cycles develop near the front in which forests can persist for centuries to millenia after which they are replaced by savannas in decades. This is not bistability but it does lead to bimodality and implies that rapid unpredictable tree cover change can occur without exogenous change. Bistability of forest cover does not occur in our simulations unless the model is sufficiently discrete. We do find bistability of savanna tree cover, in absence of forest, under a regime of high fire occurrence and high savanna sapling recruitment. 1 ar X iv :1 80 3. 07 53 5v 1 [ qbi o. Tree Cover Bimodality in Savannas and Forests Emerging from the Switching between Two Fire Dynamics
Moist savannas and tropical forests share the same climatic conditions and occur side by side. Experimental evidences show that the tree cover of these ecosystems exhibits a bimodal frequency distribution. This is considered as a proof of savanna-forest bistability, predicted by dynamic vegetation models based on non-linear differential equations. Here, we propose a change of perspective about ...
متن کاملCoexistence of stable spots and fronts in a three-component FitzHugh–Nagumo system
We investigate regions of bistability between different travelling and stationary structures in a planar singularly-perturbed three-component reaction-diffusion system that arises in the context of gas discharge systems. In previous work, we delineated the existence and stability regions of stationary localized spots in this system. Here, we complement this analysis by establishing the stabilit...
متن کاملAn existence results on positive solutions for a reaction-diffusion model with logistics growth and indefinite weight
In this paper, using sub-supersolution argument, we prove an existence result on positive solution for an ecological model under certain conditions. It also describes the dynamics of the fish population with natural predation and constant yield harvesting. The assumptions are that the ecosystem is spatially homogeneous and the herbivore density is a constant which are valid assumptions for mana...
متن کاملAmazonian forest-savanna bistability and human impact
A bimodal distribution of tropical tree cover at intermediate precipitation levels has been presented as evidence of fire-induced bistability. Here we subdivide satellite vegetation data into those from human-unaffected areas and those from regions close to human-cultivated zones. Bimodality is found to be almost absent in the unaffected regions, whereas it is significantly enhanced close to cu...
متن کاملUniqueness of travelling fronts for bistable nonlinear transport equations
We consider a nonlinear transport equation as a hyperbolic generalisation of the well-known reaction diffusion equation. Themodel is based on earlier work of K.P. Hadeler attempting to include run-and-tumble motion into the mathematical description. Previously, we proved the existence of strictly monotone travelling fronts for the three main types of the nonlinearity: the positive source term, ...
